Similar to Miss Hot Cafe, China Star also has Chinese traditional round tables along the wall so that a big group of people can eat and share food. China Star is the first authentic Chinese restaurant in Buffalo. The owner of the restaurant is from Shandong Province. She came here alone almost twenty years ago beginning in New York City; she came to Buffalo and started her restaurant six years ago. Although she is from the north of China, the chef here can cook Chinese cuisines from all parts of China.

We went to China Star this Wednesday, May 24. We order a bunch of food:

Szechuan Wonton w. Red Oil

Sauteed Cabbage w. Hot Pepper

Sweet Slick Rice Nut Soup

Double Sauteed Pork

Fried Pork Dumplings

Fresh Fish w. Sour Pickled Cabbage Sauce

Shredded Potatoes w. Vinegar & Spicy Sauce

Ma Po Tofu

We recommend the four following dishes:

Sauteed Cabbage w. Hot Pepper - It is a famous vegetarian dish from Hunan cuisine. The dish is delicious and spicy because it has red pepper in it. The main ingredient is Chinese cabbage. It tastes crispy and kind of sweet. This is a very healthy dish that I would recommend to vegetarians.

Sweet Slick Rice Nut Soup - It a kind of Chinese dessert. The main ingredient is sweet ferment rice. Sweet ferment is the traditional Chinese specialty wine. A steamed rice (glutinous rice) mixed with wine fermentation (a special microbial yeast) made of a sweet rice wine. There are also some small round balls that made with glutinous rice. It tastes warm and sweet.

Double Sauteed Pork - It is a famous Sichuan - style Chinese dish. The pork looks like bacon but it is softer and tastes different. The sliced pork is cooked twice, which makes the taste of spices and vegetables such as Napa cabbage and scallions perfectly absorbed into the meat. Since this dish is kind of salty and spicy, it tastes great with white rice.

Shredded Potatoes w. Vinegar & Spicy Sauce - This dish is one of the most common home cookings in China. The potatoes in this dish tastes very different from the others. With the vinegar and spicy sauce, it is crunchy, a little sour and spicy, rather than soft and salty. This dish also tastes great with steamed white rice. Because it is perfectly cooked on timing and the amount of spices in this restaurant, it is definitely one of the most delicious dishes there.
