Walking into this restaurant with Chinese traditional round table, we could experience the cordial feeling from home immediately. Miss Hot Cafe is a restaurant mainly making Chinese southern cuisine in Buffalo. The brightness and the style give the diners a good dining experience because they are similar to a restaurant in China: big round tables, booths.
The owner is a family from Shanghai. The daughter of this family came to America first to start the restaurant and her mom came to Buffalo to help later in 2005. From our talk with them, we noticed that even though they make American Chinese food, most Americans who came to this restaurant prefer to eat traditional food here.
Although the owner of Miss Hot Cafe came from Shanghai, they can make cuisines from all parts of China, especially Su cuisine and Chuan cuisine.
Since seven of us went to the restaurant on this Tuesday, May 16, we ordered quiet a few dishes:
Ox Tongue & Tripe With Spicy Pepper Sauce
Boiled Fish Fillet with Spicy Sauce
Glass Noodle with Minced Pork Pot
Pumpkin Pancake
Shanghai Dumpling
Phoenix Buns
Nai Huang Bun
Specialty Pork Buns
Lotus Paradise
Beef Noodle Soup
Poached Sliced Beef in Hot Chili Oil
Dan Dan Noodle
We recommend these five dishes:
Glass Noodle with Minced Pork Pot -- Even though Miss Hot Cafe is a Shanghai-style restaurant, this dish really tastes like food in northeastern China. The minced pork mixed perfectly with glass noodles. And because it is a little salty, it tastes even better with white rice. I suggest that we order it in winter because its taste makes us feel warm even if there is no hot soup inside.
Lotus Paradise -- This is a vegetarian dish. This colorful dish contains various lotus roots, celery, carrots and dutch beans. The vegetables tasted crispy and fresh. It is a very a healthy dish. I would recommand vegans or vegetarians to order this dish if they want some chinese food but they cannot eat meat.
Nai Huang Bun -- This is a special type of hot dessert in Yue Cuisine. But as time goes by, it becomes general in southern part of China. The small bun contains sweet yellow custard filling and has kind of strong milk flavor inside. In Miss Hot Cafe, there are only two of them in one order, so I recommend people who prefer sweet give it a try.
Shanghai Dumpling -- This is a type of dim sum everybody loves to eat in China. This dish orginated from Su cuisine. The dish uses white flour to roll the thin skin and puts the meat as the filling into the thin skin, and then steams the dumplings. The diners first bite a small hole on the skin, and then the fresh fat juice will immediately get into the mouth. Next the diners can eat the whole dumpling with black vinegar.
Poached Sliced Beef in Hot Chili Oil -- This is a spicy dish as well. This is a representative dish of Sichuan cuisine. The main ingredients are beef and Chinese cabbage. The sliced beef tastes tender, smooth, strongly spicy, and oily, but not greasy. It is numbing, spicy hot, and hot in temperature. It tastes a little bit similar to Chinese hotpot.
